Welcome Friends of The GBT!
Welcome to Indonesia’s first long-distance trekking trail, The Great Bali Trail!
Allow us to introduce ourselves! We are Team idGuides ~ the Great Bali Trail Founders, Village Partners and Community Trail Guides who have been developing, hosting and operating idGuides Trails for People and Planet latest Great Trails impact project, The GBT. We’ve been steadily working since mid-pandemic through 2020 until the present with 30 Balinese villages spanning the island from sea to summit to sea, to collabatively conceive, survey, develop and map 30 exciting stages, training teams of Community Trail Guides and GBT Expedition Leaders, and working out access arrangements and agreeing revenue-sharing mechanisms ensuring benefit-sharing from responsible access on foot along The GBT.
We invite you to discover The GBT through our new website as we introduce each stage, add new ways you can start exploring, and test and improve the functionality of the site so that it is truly a tool to inspire, enable exploration and connection to people and landscape, and to empower you – as explorers through your experience on foot, – and ultimately the Balinese people and ecosystems who you visit, learn from and connect with, along The GBT.
We are so grateful for your enthusiasm to explore, as we also ask for your understanding and patience as we continue to test and improve this website. Pelan tapi pasti or “slowly but surely” as we say here in Indonesia, we work to continuously improve links, add important and relevant information which is needed to book and trek, and to continue to add to the Stages, to detail further your Village Partners, to add features and functionality, and add to Trail Adventures collections so that you can start exploring.
Speaking of Exploring – we are establishing a “Friends of The Great Bali Trail” community membership program, specifically to enable and encourage inclusive, easy access for All People. The GBT is developed with local people and for All people, and so we aim to offer ways to enable responsible exploration and learning along The Trail, while also ensuring local communities are engaged and benefit from GBT ecotourism, and so that GBT Village Partners are compensated for maintenance and stewardship of the GBT through the Trails for People and Planet “GBT Trail Pass” mechanism.
Learn more on all of the above as we add details throughout the website, in future Dispatch posts, and connect with us for the latest on instagram or your preferred social media platforms.
See you out on the Trail !
We had a terrific first experience on the Stage 26, Undisan-Penglipuran Route. It was a varied, enjoyable route that we felt was just as advertised for difficulty and overall experience. It gave us confidence to review and choose the right route for ourselves and other guests in the future. We look forward to experiencing and exploring other stages in the future.
